Establishing the parents of Thomas Crump

Working backwards

Photographer Sandra Williamson, Gravestone Thomas Crump & Selina Crump nee Wheeler, Boroondara Cemetery, Kew, Victoria, Australia, Sandra Williamson’s private Collection, 11 July 2003[B023]
Thomas Crump died on the 13 April 1874 in Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia.  On his death certificate it stated that he was born in “Kent, England” and had been living for “32 years in Victoria”[i].
Based on the time he lived in Victoria he would have arrived around 1841/2.  His death certificate also stated that he had been married twice although the name of his first wife was not listed, as particulars were unknown at the time.

Shipping Records

The only Thomas Crump arriving in Australia in 1841/2 travelled on the Marquis of Hasting arriving in Sydney on 4 February 1841, accompanied by his wife Rebecca Crump.  On Rebecca’s record, it stated that she was formerly known as Underhill presumably her maiden name as her father’s surname is also given as an Underhill.[ii].[iii].

A Closer look at Thomas’s Entitlement Certificate

Below is a transcription of the certificate
“Thomas Crump
Married Male Immigrant
Arrived by the Ship Marquis of Hastings
Bought out by C.F  Warne
A native of – Parish of Goudhurst – Kent.  Parents living at East Fairly, Coxheath near Maidstone – Fathers Name Wm Startup Mothers name Elizabeth

The Entitlement certificate reveals that Thomas considered his parents to be William and Elizabeth Startup. Records show that his mother Elizabeth married William Startup by banns on 10 February 1816 in Tudeley with Capel, Kent, England.[iv]
Thomas left England before the 1841 census however his mother, stepfather and the family were still living in East Fairly, Coxheath near Maidstone, Kent, England that year.[v][vi]
  1.  William Startup, age 48, Ag Lab [step father]
  2.  Elizabeth Startup, age 51 [mother]
  3. William Startup 20, Ag Lab
  4.  John Startup 17, Ag Lab
  5. James Startup 12, Ag Lab
  6. Helenor Startup 10

Living next door to
  1. Robert Startup, aged 24, Ag Lab [eldest son of William & Elizabeth, stepbrother of Thomas]
  2.  Elizabeth Startup, aged 27 [wife of the eldest son of William & Elizabeth]
  3. Roseanna Startup, aged 1
  4. Robert Waterman, aged 70, gardener
  5. Mary Waterman, aged 55

The time & Place of Thomas’ Baptism

The pivotal evidence for the parentage of Thomas Crump is the immigration records of 1841, where his  parents are identified William Startup and Elizabeth, living in East Fairly, Coxheath near Maidstone, Kent where they are still living later in that same year at the time of the census.[vii] Elizabeth did not marry William Startup until 10 February 1816, three years after Thomas was born.[viii]  In the same immigration records his age is recorded as “Twenty seven on 25 Nov 1840” which results in a calculated birthdate of 25 Nov 1813 a two-day variance from the date recorded as in his baptism records.

Conclusion

Thomas CRUMP was born on 22nd November 1813 and baptised a month later on 2nd January 1814 Church of England, Goudhurst, Kent, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Crump late a servant of Mr W. Mynn, the father was listed as William Mynn Jnr, farmer. [ix]
His mother, Elizabeth, went on to marry William Startup on 10 February 1816, who became Thomas’s stepfather.

Myrtle May Crump Bassett

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 6: Favorite Name

My grandmother Myrtle had multiple surnames to choose from, much to her embarrassment. Growing up, we understood her birth surname to be Bassett. William Bassett who she identified as her father, was listed as such when she was enrolled in Eaglehawk Primary School in 1913 at the age of six.[i]

When she married the love of her life, Lincoln, she gave her name as “Myrtle May Crump Bassett, a Spinster”; Crump was her mother’s maiden name.[ii]  This was the first clue that maybe her birth name was not Bassett as we had all been led to believe,

On Myrtle’s birth certificate the mother’s name was listed as “Lilian Manderson formerly Crump” but no father was given.[iii] A search of the Victorian Birth Deaths & marriages (BDM) reveals that Lilian Crump had a baby named Myrtle May, who is registered under both the Crump & Manderson surnames (note the year and registration number are identical for both names indicating that this is the same person).

Result of birth search using the criteria child’s first name “Myrtle May” & mother “Lilian Crump” or children born Myrtle with the Marriages, Family history search - Births, Deaths & Marriages Victoria. [online] Online.justice.vic.gov.au. Available at: https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj [Accessed 4 Feb. 2018]
When Myrtle became a widow and remarried she listed her father as William Bassett as she had for her first marriage, and her third marriage to Ivan Rupert Lance Sharp. [iv]

It wasn’t until 1967 that things came to a head when she needed to apply for a passport to travel overseas. The process required that she apply for her full birth certificate. She traveled to the Registrar of Birth, Death & Marriages Building in Melbourne with her youngest daughter.  On arrival she asked that her daughter wait outside, after telling her in whispered tones about her dark secret that Bassett had not been her maiden name; she would need to go in alone to apply.[v]

Sandra Williamson, Myrtle May Sharp passport pages 2 & 3, Australian British Passport, digital image, Personal Collection Sandra Williamson [B464]

All went well and Myrtle was issued with her passport and with her two sisters she traveled overseas for a holiday, all three left their husbands at home.

Photographer unknown, The three “Bassett” sisters traveling overseas on their Australian passports, circa November 1967 China. Sandra Williamson's private photo collection [B177]

Later Myrtle would say that she had no doubt that William Bassett was her father as the family resemblance was strong.[vi]

Although there was some ambiguity around Myrtle’s surname, her middle name was clear it was “May” the same as her mothers.  This middle name has now been passed down from Myrtle’s mother Lilian May Crump to Myrtle, to Judith May Todman, to myself, my daughter and then onto my granddaughters, six generations in all, so obviously a family favourite.

Notes:

I have written previously about Lilian’s first husband Thomas Manderson and why this gentleman is probably not Myrtle’s father.

William Bassett & Lillian Crump became a couple, possibly around 1905 however they never married.  When Myrtle their second eldest was two years of age (in 1907) the family left Eaglehawk and relocated to Tasmania. William found employment in the mines and their only son, William, was born.[vii] They returned to Eaglehawk by 1912 for the birth of their fourth child Gladys Irene.[viii] When they moved back to Eaglehawk it was thought the couple had married in Tasmania.[ix]

DNA evidence – a DNA sample has been taken from the eldest living descendant of Myrtle and it is hoped that this will help corroborate beyond doubt that William Bassett was her father rather than Thomas Manderson.

Norman Herbert Crump

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks (Jan 8-14): Favourite Photo

My favourite photos are those that on close inspection reveal more about people and their lives.  Below is a photograph from my grandmother's collection.
Photographer Unknown, The house that Norman Crump built, Circa 1941, Brucknell [B160] on the far left is Judy Todman with brother Warwick Todman sharing the same horse.

My mother Judith Todman moved with her widowed mother and older brother to live on Norman Crump’s farm in Brucknell, Victoria, they lived for 5 years from 1939 until 1943. Norm first occupied the land in 1931 initially with a permit for occupation and then with a conditional purchase of land. I don’t much about “Uncle” Norm (everyone referred to him as Uncle Norm).  The background of the photo hints at the work that was being undertaken to clear the land and build the house. Researching the details of the land particularly when my mother was living there revealed some very interesting stories about Norman Herbert Crump [who had been born Herbert Norman Crump]

Details of Norm Crump’s Background gleaned from the files

1931 – Application for Land

Crump, Mr. D Charles called today and stated that he has known Crump for last 14 years when he took the latter in to his employ & had him for 6 years without a break & again recently has employed him.  Mr Charles has 1200 acres in Pamandera district N.S.W. & carries on mixed farming, wheat, sheep & a few cows.  Mr Charles states he can thoroughly recommend Crump in every way & had give complete satisfaction. Crump was recommended to Mr Charles by the later’s father in law for whom he had also worked.  The capital owned by Crump represents amount saved from wages." 1933 – Trouble with Rabbits

Some of the challenges faced by the local farmers including to Norm Crump included controlling the controlling the local population of rabbits.

1937 – Application for Funding for funds to build a new house

VPRS 5714/P/0000 Unit 247 Norman Herbert Crump [Application for wire netting]  Letter from JL Christies & N Robilliard to The Chief Inspector, “With reference to Mr Crumps application for a house" (the application was approved after special consideration and an advance of £320 was made)
Transcription: “Whilst making a revaluation of the area, Crump did not give us the impression that he intended getting married, and we considered that the two rooms now occupied by him would be suitable for a single man until the block became fully self-supporting.  We would point out that the two rooms now occupied by him would be suitable for a single man until the block became fully self-supporting.
We would point out that the two rooms mentioned is actually portion of his machinery shed, and also adjoins the cow shed etc.
We agree that this two rooms would be very suitable as a chaff house and store-room, and although serving as quarters for a single man would be quite unsuitable for a woman.”
