My end of line Brickwall Ancestor - John Jacka

John Jacka is my sixth great grandfather and my Jacka-line brick wall; he is where the ancestral records stop. His son, Thomas Jacka, left a will, has a headstone and can be clearly identified in the various records sets, but not his father who remains an enigma.
clip_image001
I have been able to identify 5 children all born in St Buryan, to John Jacka and his wife Elizabeth (surname not yet known). Did they have children before they arrived in St Buryan? Without any further details regarding John Jacka or his wife Elizabeth this is impossible to determine. At the moment it has been assumed that the couple were married before their son William, assumed to be the eldest, was baptised in St Buryan; this could be misleading as the children listed below could be the last 4 children of a much larger family.
To date the following children have been identified, their baptisms listed in a single volume of the St Buryan Parish Register.

Child’s Name at baptism
Baptism in the St Buryan Parish Register for Baptisms, marriages, burials, 1718-1812
Marriage
death
William Jacka
29 December 1731[i]
No further information known.

Thomas Jacka
18 August 1733[ii]
Thomas married Elizabeth Gilbert on 16 February 1760 after banns were read on January 27, February 3 & 10, in St Buryan, Cornwall, England. Both the bride and groom were identified as being of the parish of St Buryan .  Witnesses at the marriage were William Jelbart[possibly Elizabeth’s father?] and Hugh Jacka [relationship to either bride or groom has not yet been established].[iii]
14 April  1796 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England.[iv],[v]
Mary Jacka
7 June 1735[vi]
Mary possibly married Francis Richards on 27 September 1760 in Mary’s home parish of  St Buryan, after banns were read in Francis’ home parish of Paul on 10th, 17th and 24th  August 1760. Witnesses at the marriage were ?? Corker and ?hell Pindar [no known relationship to either bride of groom yet, very difficult to read].[vii]
No further information known.
Abraham Jacka
12 May 1739[viii],[ix]
Abraham Jacka possibly married Alice Sutford on 12 May 1739 in St Buryan. Witnesses at the marriage were Thomas William and Thomas Badcock [no known relationship to either bride or groom yet].[x]
Abraham was buried on 21 May 1820, St Buryan, Cornwall, England, at the age of 81.[xi]
Alice was buried on 5 February 1817, St Buryan, Cornwall, England, at the age of 8o.[xii]

It is thought that John died in or after 1740 as there were no more children baptised to the couple (at least in St Buryan) after Abraham’s baptism. [xiii]

clip_image003

The family do not appear to have moved out of the area as the younger three are still living in St Buryan when they get married. John would have been a young man when he died, his youngest child would have only been one year of age, his eldest 9 years old. His wife Elizabeth would have had her hands full and possibly would have remarried soon after John’s death.

The Will of Humphrey Jacka

Disentangling the various Jacka families in Cornwall.

This is the fourth Jacka Will I have examined in an attempt to clarify the various Jacka family groups in Cornwall.  The others that I have examined and discussed can be found:-
Humphrey Jacka’s Will was written on the 27 May 1735, the inventory of which was drawn up on the 2 July 1735.  Humphrey Jacka was identified as being late of the parish of Madernne.[Madron].

Photo by Kira auf der Heide published August 25, 2017 on Unsplash Accessed March 2018
He mentions his wife, his “dearly beloved wife Bridget” and his two children in his will. A search of the parish records shows his children were born in:-
  1. Perranzabuloe (x1, his eldest child only, born 3 years before he married Bridget Richards indicate that he may have been married  before.)
  2. Sancreed (x4 all to his second wife Bridget)

Humphrey married Bridget Richards on 26 December 1699 in Sancreed, Cornwall, England.[i]  Where a baptism and a corresponding burial record has been located with parents of Humphrey and Bridget it has been assumed that these are the missing children born to the couple but who pre-deceased their father before 1735.

Humphrey’s first name appears in the records using various spelling which include the following:-
1.       Humphry (x2)
2.       Umphry (x1)
3.       Humfrey (x2)

It appears that the two children who are mentioned in the Will are the only two that outlived their father, they are:-
  1.     Mary who married Richard Chottmoll or Chetmeal in Madron
  2.     Benjamin.

Gravestones, Parish records, Newspapers and Wills

Combining Evidence - Confirming Thomas & Anna Jacka’s family

In Sithney Parish Church Graveyard there are four Jacka family headstones along the path to the front entrance.

Figure 1 Photographer Sandra Williamson, Jacka headstones along the front path of the Sithney Parish church, 2012, Sithney, Cornwall England [J103]
Thomas Jacka & his wife Anna, nee Moyses, are buried on the footpath leading from the road to the front door of the Sithney parish church. Their grave is flanked on both sides by 3 of their children’s gravestones; Eliza(died 1828), John(died 1879) and James(died 1881).
Figure 2 Photographer Sandra Williamson, Thomas & Anna Jacka’s headstone Sithney Parish church, 2012, Sithney, Cornwall England[J096]

Their headstone reads:
“ILMO Thomas JACKA died 9 Nov 1833, aged 73 years. Also Anna his wife died March 2nd, 1857 age 88 years. Reader! Learn ti live as thou wouldst wish to die.”

Thomas died in Lannor at the age of 73 and was buried in the Sithney Church grounds.[i] His death announcement, appeared a week later, in the newspaper as follows:-

“At Lannar, in Sithney, on Tuesday, Mr. Thomas Jacka, a respectable farmer, aged 73.” [ii]

Thomas’s will was written on the third May 1833, five months before he died.[iii]

There is a discrepancy in the regarding his actual death date,
·         Headstone he died on 9th November
·         Death notice published on the 16th November, which indicates he died before the 16th. [iv]
·         Probate records his death as the 18 November 1833.[v]

His estate was settled five months after his death on the 4th April 1834. The only beneficiaries mentioned in his Will were his wife, Anna; his youngest son, James and his two remaining unwed daughters, Martha and Lucy.[vi] His other children were either married or had predeceased him and were not mentioned in his will

After Thomas’s death I have not been able to trace Anna's whereabouts through the 1841 census, however in 1851 she was living with her daughter Elizabeth (married name Watters) and her family.[vii]
1.       Thomas Watters, widow, aged 68, farmer of 56 acreas
2.       John Watters, head, aged 60, Foreman (Anna's son-in-law)
3.       Elizabeth Watters, wife, aged 53, Foreman wife (Anna's daughter)
4.       John Watters, son, aged 20, unmarried, Foreman son
5.       Thos Watters,  son, aged 18, unmarried, Foreman son
6.       James Watters,  son, aged 16, unmarried, Foreman son
7.       Henry Watters, son aged 14 , unmarried, Foreman son
8.       Elizabeth Watters, aged 11, unmarried, Foreman dau.
9.       Joseph Willey, aged 25, unmarried, Farmer Labourer
10.   Eliza Jacka, servant, aged 28, Farmer Servant (probably Anna's grand-niece daughter of her nephew William Jacka & Grace Hollow)
11.   Anna Jacka, Lodger, 82

Anna (88) died on 2 March 1857: 27 years after her husband Thomas.[viii],[ix] They are buried together in Sithney, Cornwall.[x]

Her death announcement, appeared later that week, in the newspaper as follows:-

“At Sithney, on Monday last, Mrs Anna Jacka, aged 88”.[xi]

Anna’s will was written on the 24th February 1854, three years before her death. Her estate was finalized on 16th May 1857, a year after her death. All of her children except Eliza Jacca, who predeceased her, are mentioned in her will.

While researching this family, I have identified some confusion about the number of children borne by Anna. Some of this confusion may have existed due to similar names.

To confirm the children’s identities I have examined Thomas’s Will, Anna’s Will and the Sithney Parish Registers and developed the table below having identified nine children.
