Myrtle May Crump Bassett

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 6: Favorite Name

My grandmother Myrtle had multiple surnames to choose from, much to her embarrassment. Growing up, we understood her birth surname to be Bassett. William Bassett who she identified as her father, was listed as such when she was enrolled in Eaglehawk Primary School in 1913 at the age of six.[i]

When she married the love of her life, Lincoln, she gave her name as “Myrtle May Crump Bassett, a Spinster”; Crump was her mother’s maiden name.[ii]  This was the first clue that maybe her birth name was not Bassett as we had all been led to believe,

On Myrtle’s birth certificate the mother’s name was listed as “Lilian Manderson formerly Crump” but no father was given.[iii] A search of the Victorian Birth Deaths & marriages (BDM) reveals that Lilian Crump had a baby named Myrtle May, who is registered under both the Crump & Manderson surnames (note the year and registration number are identical for both names indicating that this is the same person).

Result of birth search using the criteria child’s first name “Myrtle May” & mother “Lilian Crump” or children born Myrtle with the Marriages, Family history search - Births, Deaths & Marriages Victoria. [online] Online.justice.vic.gov.au. Available at: https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj [Accessed 4 Feb. 2018]
When Myrtle became a widow and remarried she listed her father as William Bassett as she had for her first marriage, and her third marriage to Ivan Rupert Lance Sharp. [iv]

It wasn’t until 1967 that things came to a head when she needed to apply for a passport to travel overseas. The process required that she apply for her full birth certificate. She traveled to the Registrar of Birth, Death & Marriages Building in Melbourne with her youngest daughter.  On arrival she asked that her daughter wait outside, after telling her in whispered tones about her dark secret that Bassett had not been her maiden name; she would need to go in alone to apply.[v]

All went well and Myrtle was issued with her passport and with her two sisters she traveled overseas for a holiday, all three left their husbands at home.

Later Myrtle would say that she had no doubt that William Bassett was her father as the family resemblance was strong.[vi]

Although there was some ambiguity around Myrtle’s surname, her middle name was clear it was “May” the same as her mothers.  This middle name has now been passed down from Myrtle’s mother Lilian May Crump to Myrtle, to Judith May Todman, to myself, my daughter and then onto my granddaughters, six generations in all, so obviously a family favourite.

Notes:

I have written previously about Lilian’s first husband Thomas Manderson and why this gentleman is probably not Myrtle’s father.

William Bassett & Lillian Crump became a couple, possibly around 1905 however they never married.  When Myrtle their second eldest was two years of age (in 1907) the family left Eaglehawk and relocated to Tasmania. William found employment in the mines and their only son, William, was born.[vii] They returned to Eaglehawk by 1912 for the birth of their fourth child Gladys Irene.[viii] When they moved back to Eaglehawk it was thought the couple had married in Tasmania.[ix]

DNA evidence – a DNA sample has been taken from the eldest living descendant of Myrtle and it is hoped that this will help corroborate beyond doubt that William Bassett was her father rather than Thomas Manderson.

What happened to Thomas MANDERSON?

In May 1903 he married Lillian CRUMP in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia, Lillian was only 19 years of age, Thomas was six years her senior.[1]  The couple’s whereabouts after their marriage is not known.  It is quite possible that Thomas took his new bride back to his usual place of residence in Kalgoolie, Western Australia. [2]

By February 1906 Lillian had returned to Eaglehawk, Victoria to have her first child, Thomas does not seem to have returned with her[3]  By March 1906 there is a “Missing Persons notice” the Western Australian Gazette.[4]
Western Australia, "MIssing Friends," Government gazette of Western Australia, 16 March 1906, online archives (https://www.slp.wa.gov.au/gazette/gazette.nsf/searchgazette/F5F32A6A4046D57348257C6100257B4A/$file/gg020.pdf  : accessed 26 Jan 2017), p. 898, col. 1

Three months later he has been located, in Goomalling, near Newcastle in Western Australia which was reported in both the Government Gazette and the in the MISSING FRIENDS Column of The Daily News  in Perth.[5]   {Note - Newcastle, Western Australia is now known as Toodyay, it was known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, the  town situated on the Avon River,}

A year later on the 17 May 1907 in Quebec, Canada Thomas joins the crew of the Empress of Britain, and works as a Trimmer until June 1907 where he disembarks in Liverpool, England.[6]   The records show that he worked on the Everton Grange earlier in the year as crew before joining the Empress of Britain.

Eventually, Thomas winds up in California in 1910 where he is working as a labourer in a mine, He is living San Simeon, San Luis Obispo, California in the Cambria Precinct.[7] By 1920 he is in Big River, Mendocino, California in Road Street Winning West Lown Carpar.[8]

He eventually dies in 1938 Sonoma having worked as a farm labourer for 30 years.[9]

Further Research

We know where Thomas Manderson is on the
  •          30 June 1906, he is in Goomalling, WA;
  •          ?? date unknown he is on the Everton Grange
  •          31 May 1907 he joins the crew of the  Empress of Britain in Quebec, Canada
  •          17 June 1907, he is in Liverpool, England disembarking the Empress of Britain

How did he get to Quebec?  How and/or when did he leave WA?

Why?

Lillian CRUMP had four children. Her two eldest children Doris and Myrtle were born in Eaglehawk, Victoria; both were registered without a father.[10]  Her third child William BASSETT was born 1908 in Dundas, Tasmania with William BASSETT noted as the father in his military records.[11]  Her last child Gladys was born in 1912 in Eaglehawk, Victoria with William BASSETT listed as the father.  In 1912 Lillian and William BASSETT were living in Eaglehawk, Victoria as a married couple.[12] William BASSETT was Lillian’s long term partner in life.

Establishing where Thomas Manderson was living will help to confirm or eliminate him as the possible biological father of Doris & Myrtle, Lillian’s two eldest children.

Sepia Saturday August 2016 Love & Marriage

Marriage and love don’t always come at the same time. But when love does come hang onto it with both hands like Lillian did.

Thomas MANDERSON married Lillian CRUMP in May 1903 in Eaglehawk, Victoria[i]. Lillian was only 19 years of age, Thomas was six years her senior.
Figure 1 G.L. Massingham, Wedding Photo of Lillian Crump & Thomas Manderson, 1903, scan of original image.

There are no recorded births for any children to the couple in either Victoria or Western Australia. Thomas listed his usual place of residence as Kalgoolie, Western Australia on their marriage certificate.  Lillian however did go on to have 4 children but none listed Thomas as the father.[ii]  The father of all Lillian CRUMP’s children is thought to have been William BASSETT, but only the two youngest children William (b.1908) and Gladys Irene (b.1912) have been confirmed.[iii]  No father is listed for the eldest two children Doris Lillian (b.1906) and Myrtle May (b.1907).[iv]

A missing person article appeared in the local Western Australian newspaper in 1906 announcing that a Thomas MANDERSON had been found, locating  the original "Missing Person" article might help to confirm if this is the same Thomas MANDERSON who had married Lillian Crump in 1903.[v]  It is thought that by 1907 Thomas MANDERSON had gone to sea and can be found on the “Empress of Britain” as a crew member and he may have eventually settled in America.[vi]

Lillian was 21 years old when she gave birth to Doris, her eldest child.[vii] Neither Lillian MANDERSON/CRUMP, Thomas MANDERSON or William BASSETT were the informant on either the two eldest children's birth certificates.[viii]  Later Myrtle would say that she had no doubt that William Bassett was her father as the family resemblance was strong. [ix]

William Bassett & Lillian Crump became a couple, possibly around 1905 however they never married.  When Myrtle their second eldest was two years of age (in 1907) the family left Eaglehawk and relocated to Tasmania. William found employment in the mines and their only son, William, was born.[x] They returned to Eaglehawk by 1912 for the birth of their fourth child Gladys Irene.[xi]

When they moved back to Eaglehawk it was thought the couple had married in Tasmania.[xii] Later in life after a bout of illness Lillian insisted that a portrait was taken of her and William to commemorate their union.  Later she would say that William would have nothing to remember her without the portrait.

Ironically it would be William who died first of miner’s complaint in 1945.[xiii]
