My end of line Brickwall Ancestor - John Jacka

John Jacka is my sixth great grandfather and my Jacka-line brick wall; he is where the ancestral records stop. His son, Thomas Jacka, left a will, has a headstone and can be clearly identified in the various records sets, but not his father who remains an enigma.
clip_image001
I have been able to identify 5 children all born in St Buryan, to John Jacka and his wife Elizabeth (surname not yet known). Did they have children before they arrived in St Buryan? Without any further details regarding John Jacka or his wife Elizabeth this is impossible to determine. At the moment it has been assumed that the couple were married before their son William, assumed to be the eldest, was baptised in St Buryan; this could be misleading as the children listed below could be the last 4 children of a much larger family.
To date the following children have been identified, their baptisms listed in a single volume of the St Buryan Parish Register.

Child’s Name at baptism
Baptism in the St Buryan Parish Register for Baptisms, marriages, burials, 1718-1812
Marriage
death
William Jacka
29 December 1731[i]
No further information known.

Thomas Jacka
18 August 1733[ii]
Thomas married Elizabeth Gilbert on 16 February 1760 after banns were read on January 27, February 3 & 10, in St Buryan, Cornwall, England. Both the bride and groom were identified as being of the parish of St Buryan .  Witnesses at the marriage were William Jelbart[possibly Elizabeth’s father?] and Hugh Jacka [relationship to either bride or groom has not yet been established].[iii]
14 April  1796 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England.[iv],[v]
Mary Jacka
7 June 1735[vi]
Mary possibly married Francis Richards on 27 September 1760 in Mary’s home parish of  St Buryan, after banns were read in Francis’ home parish of Paul on 10th, 17th and 24th  August 1760. Witnesses at the marriage were ?? Corker and ?hell Pindar [no known relationship to either bride of groom yet, very difficult to read].[vii]
No further information known.
Abraham Jacka
12 May 1739[viii],[ix]
Abraham Jacka possibly married Alice Sutford on 12 May 1739 in St Buryan. Witnesses at the marriage were Thomas William and Thomas Badcock [no known relationship to either bride or groom yet].[x]
Abraham was buried on 21 May 1820, St Buryan, Cornwall, England, at the age of 81.[xi]
Alice was buried on 5 February 1817, St Buryan, Cornwall, England, at the age of 8o.[xii]

It is thought that John died in or after 1740 as there were no more children baptised to the couple (at least in St Buryan) after Abraham’s baptism. [xiii]

clip_image003

The family do not appear to have moved out of the area as the younger three are still living in St Buryan when they get married. John would have been a young man when he died, his youngest child would have only been one year of age, his eldest 9 years old. His wife Elizabeth would have had her hands full and possibly would have remarried soon after John’s death.

The Will of Humphrey Jacka

Disentangling the various Jacka families in Cornwall.

This is the fourth Jacka Will I have examined in an attempt to clarify the various Jacka family groups in Cornwall.  The others that I have examined and discussed can be found:-
Humphrey Jacka’s Will was written on the 27 May 1735, the inventory of which was drawn up on the 2 July 1735.  Humphrey Jacka was identified as being late of the parish of Madernne.[Madron].

Photo by Kira auf der Heide published August 25, 2017 on Unsplash Accessed March 2018
He mentions his wife, his “dearly beloved wife Bridget” and his two children in his will. A search of the parish records shows his children were born in:-
  1. Perranzabuloe (x1, his eldest child only, born 3 years before he married Bridget Richards indicate that he may have been married  before.)
  2. Sancreed (x4 all to his second wife Bridget)

Humphrey married Bridget Richards on 26 December 1699 in Sancreed, Cornwall, England.[i]  Where a baptism and a corresponding burial record has been located with parents of Humphrey and Bridget it has been assumed that these are the missing children born to the couple but who pre-deceased their father before 1735.

Humphrey’s first name appears in the records using various spelling which include the following:-
1.       Humphry (x2)
2.       Umphry (x1)
3.       Humfrey (x2)

It appears that the two children who are mentioned in the Will are the only two that outlived their father, they are:-
  1.     Mary who married Richard Chottmoll or Chetmeal in Madron
  2.     Benjamin.

Did Kate Dutton’s father serve in the 39th Regiment of Foot of The British Army?

The search for Thomas Dutton (part 1)

According to Kate’s birth certificate her father, Thomas Dutton, was a Soldier of the 39 Reg inf, who was said to be about 35 years old and born in London.[i]
Excerpt from the birth certificate Kate Dutton, born 21 December 1857. (Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Australia. 2541/1858)
“39 Reg inf” seems to suggest that he was a member of  The 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot an infantry regiment of the British Army.

In the 1800s the regiment did come to New South Wales, Australia  “toward the end of 1825[30] and saw service guarding convicts and establishing settlements at Hobart, Sydney, Swan River Colony and Bathurst before leaving for India in July 1832.”[ii] If Thomas Dutton came to Australia with the Regiment it seemed plausible that he could have retired in Australia.
The only Dutton I could find was a William Henry Dutton as it was not unusual for people to change their first names particularly if they were trying to obscure their identity.  As William was the only Dutton in the 39th Regiment of Foot I decided to trace his life to see if he were one and the same as Kate’s father.  Below are the results of that research.

The Life of William Henry Dutton

William Henry Dutton served a total of just over 18 years in the British army, retiring as an invalid with Hepatic & Catarrhal afflictions.[iii] He was born on 8 September 1803 and baptised eight years later on the 27 May 1811 in St Andrews, London, in St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, Camden, England to Thomas & Maria Dutton.[iv],[v]  William retired on the 27 May 1840 with the rank of Drummer.[vi]  He was a member of the 39th Regiment of Foot. [vii]

He can be found in the following censuses.

In the 1841 Census William was living either in or close by the Royal Hospital in White Lion Street, Middlesex as a pensioner.[viii]
[In 1845 According to the Royal Hospital Chelsea records he moved around quite a lot from 1845-1846 from the pay districts of Jersey to Worcester.[ix] In 1846 he moved from Worcester 1/1, back to Jersey 1/7 and then onto Birmingham on the  1st November.[x]]

In the 1851 Census, he can be found living as a Chelsea Pensioner unmarried in a place called Henley in Arden in Warwickshire, with a 9 year old girl as a lodger.[xi]

In the 1861 Census he was still in Henley in Arden in Warwickshire but now was living in a boarding house, which included another Chelsea pensioner named Tom Lowe.[xii]
[According to the Royal Hospital Chelsea records he moved from the Birmingham pay district on 1 January 1861 when he moved to Coventry pay district, which probably coincides with his move from Warwickshire to Ross in Herefordshire.[xiii] ]

In the 1871 census he was living in the town of Ross in Herefordshire, England, in a lodging house, his occupation is listed as Pensioner.[xiv]

In the 1881 Census, he was living still living in Over Ross Street.[xv]

He died on 16 April 1883[or 87 as the writing is difficult to read] while living in Jersey, England. [xvi]

Conclusion

William Henry Dutton did not marry nor once he retired did he leave England, he is not Thomas Dutton using a different name.  It appears that Thomas Dutton’s was not a member of the 39 Regiment of Foot, and so the search continues.
