Andrew Munro’s Journey from India to Australia in 1869

Andrew Munro, a retired Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant, concluded his military service on 19 October 1868 at Camp Mhow, India. At the time of his discharge, he intended to reside in Bombay (modern-day Mumbai).[i] However, within a year, he embarked on a journey to Australia, accompanied by his wife and seven children.

On 3 September 1869, the Munro family boarded the SS Travancore, in Bombay, destined for China and under the command of Captain Eastley. The ship’s first stop en route was at Point de Galle in Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka). The ship carried both passengers and a cargo of Malwa opium, a common trade good in the 19th century.[ii]

“The P & O’s “S.S. Travancore”, Captain Eastley will sail today for China, with chests of Malwa Opium, and the following passengers: - For Galle-Mr. Beynon; For Sydney-Mr. Prick and Mr. D, Richmond; For Melbourne- Mr. W. Allingham, Mr. A. Munro, wife and 7 children, Mr Crompton, and Mr Oldenwald; For Hongkong-A?? Housein Abdooally, and Jajet Emmael Seeslick”

Under normal conditions, the voyage from Bombay to Point de Galle typically required 6–7 days. The family likely arrived in Galle around 10 September 1869, where they transferred to another ship, the Geelong RMS Steamer.

Transfer to the Geelong RMS Steamer

The Geelong RMS Steamer, operated by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, was tasked with carrying passengers, cargo, and mail from Point de Galle to Australia. The transfer at Galle was routine for travellers heading to Australia, as Galle served as a major transit hub in the Indian Ocean.

The Geelong departed Galle at 7:00 p.m. on 7 September 1869, continuing via King George’s Sound in Western Australia to Hobson’s Bay in Melbourne. Weather reports from the voyage indicate a relatively uneventful, albeit uncomfortable, trip: [iii]

“The Geelong sailed from Galle at 7 p.m. on the 7th inst, with favourable weather. Experienced moderate south east trades, and afterwards a succession of head winds until her arrival at the Sound at 3 40 p.m. on the 21st instant. Sailed from the Sound at a quarter-past 5 a.m. on the 22nd, with moderate breezes from N.N.E. to N.N.W., and a very heavy swell for the first two days ; then strong breezes from S.S.E. to E.S.E, with much rain.”[iv]

The Geelong reached Melbourne on 28 September 1869, where the Munro family disembarked.[v]

Andrew Munro Life in India

This Blogpost provides a detailed overview of Andrew Munro's life & military service in India during the mid-19th century.

Military Service in India

Andrew Munro served a distinguished military career in India from 1848 to 1868, initially enlisting in the East India Company’s Bombay Artillery as a Gunner. Over two decades, he rose through the ranks to become a Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant.

1.       Early Service (1848-1854):

Enlisted as a European soldier in the 3rd Company of the 1st Battalion of Artillery under the Honourable East India Company (HEIC), serving in the Army of the Bombay Presidency.  He was stationed at Ahmednagar (historically spelled Ahmednuggur), a prominent British military outpost in the region. [i]

During his service as an enlisted soldier, he steadily progressed through the following ranks:

·         1848-1852: Gunner[ii][iii]

·         1853: Promoted to Bombardier[iv][v]

·         1854: Promoted to Corporal[vi][vii]

2.       Progression to Non-Commissioned Officer (1855-1860):

In 1855, Andrew Munro was elevated to the rank of European Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and transferred to the “Non-Effect List” (N.E.L.) within the HEIC’s Army of the Bombay Presidency. [viii][ix]

The N.E.L. recorded personnel no longer serving in active regiments but retained for roles such as administration or logistics. By transferring to this list, Munro shifted from regimental duties to a support role, often within the Ordnance Department.

Career Highlights as an NCO:

·         1855: Retained the Rank of Corporal,[x] and appointed Acting Laboratory Man in the ordinance Department.[xi]

This role involved in the preparation, testing, and maintenance of ammunition, explosives, and other ordnance materials, ensuring the safety, reliability, and functionality of ordnance used by the military.

·         Dec 1856 & Feb 1857: he was in active service in Persia.[xii]  During this time he was promoted to Acting Store with rank of Corporal.[xiii]

Munro’s role likely involved supporting various operational theatres of the campaign, including Bushehr, Mohammerah, and adjacent areas. While not directly participating in all engagements, he played a critical logistical role.1857: Promoted to Store with the rank of Corporal, serving as a Clerk[xiv] Later promoted to Acting Store with the rank of Sergeant.[xv]

The Indian Rebellion and Structural Changes:

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 brought significant changes to British colonial administration. Following the rebellion, the East India Company’s forces were dissolved, and control was transferred to the British Crown. This transition included the integration of artillery regiments into the British Army.[xvi][xvii] “On 1 November 1858 the East India Company ceased to exist and many of its original regiments also disappeared. Those that remained were transferred to the Government of India and in 1861 many of these were merged with the British Army.”[xviii]

Further Promotions:

·         1858: Promoted to Laboratory Sergeant.[xix]

·         1859: Returned to active regimental service, retaining the Rank of Sergeant.[xx]

·         1860: Appointed as a Sub-Conductor in the Ordnance Department.[xxi]

3.       Transition to the British Army (1861-1868):

In 1861, Andrew volunteered to join the Royal Artillery’s 21st Brigade in the Royal British Army.[xxii] This transition followed the integration of the Honourable East India Company’s forces into the British Army after the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the subsequent dissolution of the Company’s military command.

Service in the Royal Artillery: 1861 to 1868 :

·         Served as Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant in the 21st Brigade of the Royal Artillery.[xxiii][xxiv][xxv][xxvi][xxvii][xxviii]

4.       Retirement

1868: In 1868, Munro retired from the military under Indian Pension Rules.[xxix] This designation indicates that he was granted a pension aligned with the regulations governing military personnel who served in British India.

Family Life

In 1856, after transferring to the Non-Effect List and advancing to the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO),[xxx] Andrew Munro married Isabella Jennings, the 17-year-old daughter of George Jennings, at St. Andrew’s Church in Bombay.[xxxi]  Over the next twelve years, Andrew and Isabella welcomed eight children while stationed across various military cantonments in India, reflecting Andrew’s postings and career advancements. The details of their children’s births and the family’s residences provide a glimpse into their life during Andrew’s distinguished military service.

Together they had the following children in India:

1.       Blanche Louisa Angelina Munro, born 06 April 1857 and baptised 28 April 1857, daughter of Andrew (Clerk in the Grand Art[illery]) & Isabella Munro, residing in Kalbadevre, Presidency of Bombay.[xxxii]

2.       James Palmer Munro, born 23 Sep 1858 and baptised 19 Oct 1858, son of Andrew (Clerk in the Gd Arsenal) & Isabella Munro, residing in Kalkadaric, Presidency of Bombay.[xxxiii]

3.       Isabella Ruth Munro, born 21 May 1860 and baptised 7 June 1860, daughter of Andrew (Sub: Conductor Ordinance Depart) & Isabella Munro, residing in Ahmednagar, Presidency of Bombay.[xxxiv] Isabella died of measles at the age of 10 months and 20 days old on the 10th April 1861 and was buried the next day in Kirkee, Bombay, India.[xxxv]

4.       George Andrew Munro, born 14 Dec 1861 and baptised 30 Dec 1861, son of Andrew (Brigade Qr Mst Serjeant Royal Artillery) & Isabella Munro, residing in Kirkree, Presidency of Bombay.[xxxvi]

8.       Catherine Eva Munro, born 16 Oct 1868 and baptised 8 Nov 1868, daughter of Andrew (Quarter Master Serjeant 21st Brigade R.A) & Isabella Monro, residing in Mhow, Presidency of Bengal, India.[xl]

Residences in India

Andrew Munro’s life in India was shaped by his military career, which dictated his movements across key British cantonments starting in Ahmednagar. After marrying Isabella in 1856, the couple settled in Kalbadevi, Bombay, where they began their family. Subsequent relocations to Ahmednagar, Kirkee, and Mhow reflect Andrew’s career progression from clerk to Sub-Conductor and ultimately to Quartermaster Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. Following his retirement in 1868, Andrew briefly settled in Bombay before emigrating to Australia the following year.

·         Ahmednagar (1848-1846):

Before getting married Andrew was stationed in Ahmednuggur.[xli] As an unmarried man he was likely living in the military cantonment of Ahmednuggur, the administrative and residential hub for European and Indian troops.

·         Kalbadevi, Bombay (1857-1860):

During this time, Andrew and Isabella began their family, residing in Kalbadevi, a bustling commercial and residential area of Bombay.[xlii][xliii] As a clerk in the military, Andrew likely lived in accommodations provided for colonial officials, relatively comfortable compared to local standards.

·         Ahmednagar (1860):

By 1860, he family moved to Ahmednagar, where Andrew became a Sub-Conductor[xliv] in the Ordnance Department. Ahmednagar was a key British cantonment, serving as a logistical hub for the western India military operations.

·         Kirkee, Bombay Presidency (1861):

In late 1861, the family relocated to Kirkee (modern-day Khadki), near Pune, a major military station with an ordnance depot and artillery units.[xlv]  Kirkee’s strategic importance made it a focal point for regional British military operations.

·         Mhow (1863-1868):

By 1863, Andrew was stationed in Mhow,[xlvi][xlvii][xlviii][xlix] a prominent British military cantonment in Central India. Serving as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the Royal Artillery’s 21st Brigade, Andrew managed supplies for a large garrison in this strategically vital region.

·         Bombay 1868:

Following his retirement in 1868, Andrew opted to settle in Bombay. He emigrated to Australia the following year, for reasons not yet identified.
