Snippets from the life of Martha Sarah Ellis.
Kate Ellen Ellis was born on the 12 Jun 1872 and baptised on the 9th Sep 1881 in Saint Luke’s Parish Church, Rosemary Road, Peckham, London, England.[1] She was the younger sister of Martha Sarah Ellis and the 4th child of Martha Bartlett and Alfred Ellis. She married Andrew Wardle in 1891 a well to do builder in Freemantle, Western Australia.[2]
“She was always an ardent worker for the Church of Christ Fremantle, of which she was a deaconess. During the war period, she worked very hard for the Red Cross and other societies for the relief of soldiers. Mrs Wardle was of bright disposition always anxious for the welfare of others and held the affection of all with whom she became associated. She leaves a husband, two sons, three daughters, and ten grandchildren to mourn their loss.”[3]

She died on the 1 Aug 1935 in Fremantle, Western Australia and was buried on 2 Aug 1935 in Freemantle Cemetery.[4]
The funeral was a large affair with many people in attendance “The hearse was laden with beautiful floral tributes, and the bereaved relatives have been the recipients of widespread expressions of sympathy”
I wonder if Martha Sarah Ellis travelled over to attend the funeral? The newspapers list many mourners but there is no mention of any Todman family (Martha’s married surname).
