Ebbott Markers Tresmeer Cornwall England

There are two known markers in the Tresmeer Church, Cornwall, England.

  •  A commemorative tablet inside the church on the south tower wall for Gregory & Dorothy Ebbott (my 6th great grandparents)

Photographer Julie Walters, Commemorative tablet on the south tower wall for Gregory & Dorothy Ebbott  in  the Tresmere Church, 2015 digital image. Sandra Williamson’s private collection [Ebb162a] (image poor quality)

The commemorative tablet is on the south tower wall for Gregory & Dorothy Ebbott inside the church. Unfortunately, at the time of photographing the lighting was poor and it was difficult to get the angles right.

The Plaque reads: -
Memory of
Gregory Ebbott
Of this Parifh, who was buried
The 26th day of May 1778. Aged 68
Dorothy Ebbott his wife was
Buried the 6th day of May 1783
Aged 66

According to the Tresmere parish church registers, the burials occurred in the following order
Gregory Ebbot was buried 19 May 1778.[i] The plaque tells us that he died at the age of 68 which suggests that he was born in 1710.

Dorothy Ebbot was buried 5 May 1783.[ii] The plaque records her age at death as 66 which indicates that she was born in 1717.

Sadly in 2016 St. Nicholass Church closed because so few people used it, I wonder what will become of these waypoints in our history.[iii]

Research Notes
There is a discrepancy between the burial record and of seven days on the plaque for Gregory’s death, it could be that he was not buried until seven days after his death, or as the plaque was most likely erected after his wife Dorothy’s death in 1783, the dates may have been misremembered.
