Joseph Todman (1812 - 1892)

Joseph, son of Daniel Todman & Sarah was baptised on 4 October 1812 in St Alphage, Greenwich, Kent, England.[i] He was one of eight children and the second eldest boy, his father was a gardener.

Joseph married Charlotte Snell on 21 July 1833 in St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, Greenwich, England.[ii]

Together they had at least two children born within a year of each other:

  1. James Todman, born on 23 January 1834 and baptised the same year on 3 February as the son of Joseph Todman(Groom) & Charlotte Todman residing in Woolwich Road, in St Alphege, Greenwich, England.[iii]
  2. Mary Ann Ramsey Todman, born on 31 August 1835 and baptised four years later on 31 July 1839 as the daughter of Joseph Todman(Coachman) & Charlotte Todman residing in Woolwich Road, in St Alphege, Greenwich, England.[iv]

Living together Ceylon Place are:

  1. Joseph Todman, aged 25 born Kent, England, listed as working as an independent  
  2. Mary Todman, aged 25 born Kent, England [possibly born between 7/06/1811 and 6/06/1816 possibly Charlotte wife of Joseph or his sister]
  3. James Todman, aged 6, born Kent, England [child of Jospeh]
  4. Mary Todman, Female, aged 5, born Kent, England [child of Jospeh, baptised as Mary Ann Ramsay Todman who married Charles Willoughby]
  5. Sarah Todman, Female, aged 22, 1819, born Kent, England [Joseph’s sister, who died before the 1851 Census]
  6. Maria Snell, Female, aged 15, 1826, born Kent, England [Mary Todman nee Snell’s niece, the illegitimate daughter of her sister Susanna]

Ceylon Place, is a short row of Georgian cottages which “were built in the lane behind a ‘big’ house and a huge corn mill which stood on the on the riverfront. … housing for local workers – fishermen, mill workers, and barge builders.”[vi] You could see the “big mill moving slowly, the big house with gardens going down to the river.  Behind it were the cottages and pub overlooking some six acres of millponds with meadows beyond.  Nearby was a thatched barn and all around were grazing cows and sheep.” [vii]

Joseph disappeared from the records after 1851 and we were unable to locate him again until the 1881 Census.

In the 1881 Census: Joseph was boarding at “Ann’s Place” in Lower Woolwich Road, Charlton Next Woolwich, London, England with the Carr family, his occupation listed as M[arket] Gardener.[viii]

In 1882, his wife, Charlotte, aged 81 died of general decline and was buried, as wife of Joseph Todman on 1 August 1882 in St Marys, Chatham, Kent, England.[ix]

On 17 January 1884: Joseph, a gardener aged 69, is admitted into the Woolwich Road Workhouse on by his nephew John of 1 Barings Folly.[x] 

In the 1891 Census: Joseph, a retired gardener aged 76, still an inmate in the District Greenwich Union Workhouse and listed as single.[xi]

On 20 January 1892: Joseph was admitted to the Hospital and Infirmary, Vanburgh Hill by the Medical Officer of the Workhouse where he died.[xii]

On 6 April 1892 Joeseph died suffering from chronic bronchitis & senile decay.[xii][xiii][xiv] He was buried on 12 April 1892 in Greenwich Cemetery.[xv]
