Theme Reveal: Behind the Newsprint
This April, as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge (#AtoZChallenge), I’ll be sharing these stories—one letter at a time.
Rather than forcing each title to match a letter, I’ll be following the alphabet more loosely—labelling each entry Article A through to Article Z—so the stories can unfold more naturally.
When I’m researching my family history, I always scour the newspapers for clues. A small notice or a brief report can open unexpected doors, often taking me to unusual places as I dig into the records to uncover what really happened and to find the missing details.
Newspapers, however, are imperfect sources. They contain bias, errors, and omissions—meaning there is always something to question, verify, and explore further.
This approach is not entirely new to me; I have explored how newspaper reports—read alongside other records which can open up a much larger story. It offers a glimpse of the kind of research and storytelling I’ll be drawing on throughout this series.
For this year’s A–Z Challenge, I’ll be going “Behind the Newsprint,” taking 26 newspaper clippings and using archival records and other sources to look beyond the headlines and uncover the fuller story.
Some stories may confirm what was reported—others may reveal something quite different.
